Cockroaches are prolific breeders capable of producing several thousand offspring in a year. Cockroaches can passively transport dangerous microbes on their body surfaces and have shown to be linked with allergic reactions in humans such as asthma.
- A cockroach can live almost a month without food and about two weeks without water.
- Some female cockroaches only mate once and stay pregnant for life.
- A cockroach can live for up to one week without its head.
- Cockroaches can hold their breath for up to 40 minutes.
- Cockroaches can run up to 4.8 kilometres an hour.
Signs of Cockroach infestation may include finding their faeces which can resemble coffee grounds/black pepper or cylindrical droppings depending on the size of the Cockroach. The quantity of droppings is often a good indicator of the level of infestation. Their egg cases known as ootheca, are oval shaped and can house between 14 and 40 eggs and can be found attached to objects. Some species of cockroaches emit unpleasant smells. In the case of serious infestation, a strong, oily or musty odour may be present.
